Saluting Innovation at The City of Austin for jumping on the transformation bandwagon with the creation of the role of Chief Innovation Officer. The new department exists to connect people who have ideas with facilitators who can help turn those ideas into reality. This department will benefit residents and business owners through the city’s open government initiative, which aims to increase the city’s transparency. An important driver of innovation is the availability of information that can help people develop tools that everyone can use. The City of Austin just launched an open portal site data.austintexas.gov containing city data that anyone can access. The new Chief Innovation Officer, Kerry O’Connor, has a background in open innovation, human-centered design, and agile software development. We salute the City of Austin for incorporating innovation in government so that employees, residents and business owners think differently, take risks and redesign approaches to solving civic challenges.
