Yesterday, I spoke at Planview’s Horizons 2014 Annual Customer Conference. The objective of the event is to inspire leaders in portfolio management. Planview sells a great set of software tools that enable a company to manage its pipeline of innovation initiatives and make investment allocation decisions.
I was asked this week to speak to a group of large-company Chief Information Officers on the subject of innovation in IT. At first I wasn’t sure that I have anything meaningful to say, but as I thought about the challenges and opportunities I see in my corporate client base I knew that IT is in need of a healthy dose of innovation.
Successful PLM programs are led by a business sponsor with IT support, not the other way around. The executive sponsor should be able to clearly articulate the strategic imperative using language that resonates with all of the affected business functions. Strong sponsorship is critical to overcoming inevitable obstacles and typically short corporate attention spans.
