An Adult Sleepover

At Kalypso, the management consulting firm I lead, we fight hard against all manner of tired, trite, unimaginative, and clichéd corporate activities. This applies to the work we do for clients where we believe in the power of creativity and innovation to make the world a better place. It also applies to the things we do for ourselves.

This weekend marks the tenth annual Kalypso KARMA, our yearly global gathering. From the very beginning, this event has been a different kind of get-together. We hold KARMA in a different city each year and immerse ourselves in the culture and history of the community where we meet. Instead of boring PowerPoint presentations, we have fun, interactive learning exercises. Instead of hotel ballrooms we hold our awards dinner in NFL locker rooms, foreign embassies, and rock n’ roll clubs. Each venue is unforgettable. As an innovation firm we feel that we must continue to get better as we get bigger.

We have the great privilege of working with our closest friends and I am very proud of the fact that every member of our organization is committed to helping their colleagues. KARMA is a visible, physical manifestation of that important aspect of our culture. This year we could not find a hotel that had sufficient capacity available for our entire firm, so we are all sharing rooms for the first time. This “adult sleepover” is bringing a new dimension to our approach to fun at firm events. The grace and humor with which this “innovation” was received is a testament to the strength of our culture and the friendship component of our vision.

How can you improve the effectiveness of your next corporate event, offsite, or team building exercise? I challenge you to apply a little creativity and innovation to the plan. Make it unforgettable.
